Eyebright has been traditionally used since the 14th century for various disorders of the eye.  The astringent qualities of eyebright have also been used to address congestion, sinusitis and other issues relating to inflammation of the mucous membranes.

According to the Doctrine of Signatures, the primary use of eyebright is as a remedy for the eye since the white flowers with black centers look somewhat like an eyes.
